U-505

On June 4, 1944, the U.S. Navy hunted down and captured the German submarine U-505. After decades of exposure to Chicago’s brutal weather, the vessel was nearly lost. In two monumental efforts, the Museum of Science and Industry raised $35 million to restore the sub, then engineered and lowered a block-long structure to house it in a new subterranean gallery.

The challenge: how do you relaunch a legacy exhibit with fresh excitement? By taking the U-505 experience to the people.
